How to Write a Great Recipe
Writing a recipe is one of the most important things that you should do before you start cooking. Every great recipe will help to avoid common mistakes that usually occur when preparing a meal. Whether you are a chef at a big restaurant or you are a mother who wants to prepare a meal for your family members, learning to prepare a recipe can be of great benefit.
A recipe normally has two parts; the ingredients list section and how to prepare the food section. The following guide will elaborate on how to write both sections of a recipe. This guide provides general instructions that can be adopted in writing recipes for most common meals.
Before preparing the ingredients list, it’s good to indicate the title or the name of the food you intend to prepare. The number and size of servings should also be indicated just below the title.
How to list the ingredients:
List all the ingredients in the order that they will be used to prepare your food. Listing ingredients in the order of their use helps to avoid leaving out any ingredient.
List the ingredients starting with the most important ones. The major ingredients are usually used first during meal preparation thus list them first should be easy.
State everything clearly when listing your ingredients including the specific quantities to be used.
If the are a variety of elements like crust and fillings in the recipe, list the elements separately
If the ingredients are to be used simultaneously such as in baking where dry ingredients are mixed together, write them down in a descending order of their quantities.
Two numerals should not be used together when listing ingredients. The second figure should be in parenthesis. This normally occurs when listing sizes, for instance, 2 (5-ounce) package creams.
If the ingredients do not start with a number, the first letter should be categorized. For example, green pepper should be written as Green pepper
I an ingredient can be prepared easily, that technique should be included in list section e.g., ’2 scrambled eggs. Where some ingredients are used more than once, list the total quantity on the first use then add divided’. In the method section, indicate the amount to be used in every instance.
Ingredients should be listed in their generic names.
The Preparation section:
Where possible, include the sizes utensil to be used. For instance, ’In a small mixing bowl….’’
The sentences in this section need not to be complete; they should be brief and concise.
Provide clear information on the heating level where the ingredients have to be placed on a stove-top or in an oven.
State the cooking time clearly. For example bake for 20 to 25 minutes or till the crust turn to golden brown color.’
Similar to the list section, where the recipe different components for example, crust and filling, provide information on how to use each element separately.
Make your instructions as clear as possible by explaining each step in a separate paragraph.
The last section should state how to serve the meal. This part should include information such as how to plate the food.
Every recipe should be tested before being used in preparing an important meal to ensure that it works. It’s good to ensure that the recipe contains the required amount of ingredients and the meal tastes as expected.
